Last Sunday, it snowed heavily and without interruption, the entire day. With high winds causing snow drifts, it was not easy to tell, just how much snow was accumulating. By Monday morning, the snowfall had tapered off, and I estimated we had gotten over a foot of snow. Everything was cancelled, on Monday, (including Molloy, so no lacrosse practice) so there was plenty of time for snow removal.

With our practice field still under snow, and temperatures only in the teens or low twenties, the Lady Lions were forced to practice indoors, for the first time in my four seasons with the team! Tuesday we did what we could in the Gym, but anyone who has ever attempted lacrosse practice in a Gym, will tell you, it is better than nothing, but not by much!

Wednesday and Thursday, we were able to practice at the Long Island Sports Complex in Freeport (about 15 minutes from the Molloy Campus). The practice times made it impossible for everyone to be there and many players could only be there for a portion of practice. The facility does not have the lines for Women’s Lacrosse on it, which is limiting. Nevertheless, I think practice was beneficial, both days.

By Friday, things were looking up, at least a little bit. The snow had been removed from our practice field, and afternoon temperatures allowed for a one hour practice! It felt great to be back out there, if only for an abbreviated session. Despite the cold, we had a pretty sharp practice! I was happy with our attitude and effort.

Saturday morning (yesterday), practice was “cold ruled” out. So, we were inside for a film and chalk talk, session. As we began, Coach Pepe found out that our scrimmage against St. Joe’s, scheduled for today, was cancelled! This was, of course, very disappointing.
So, instead of writing about how we looked, in our first scrimmage of the season, I am writing about how difficult this winter weather is making it for us, to prepare for the fast approaching season. At least we know that other teams are also facing these types of challenges. I have been happy about how our team has handled all of this, so far. Hopefully, there will be a break in the cold weather, and we can resume our normal practice schedule (though the ten day forecast says “no”, to that idea!). So we turn our attention to the week ahead and hope that we can get our scrimmage in, against Western Connecticut, next Saturday.
