A Quick Trip to D.C.

We had an entire week to recover from the New Haven game and prepare for our trip to the Nation’s Capital, to play the Firebirds of the University of District of Columbia. We spent some extra time viewing the film of the New Haven game – there was much to be learned from that outing, and hopefully, we are better for it, going forward. I thought, we looked fairly sharp and focused in practice and the energy level improved as the week went on.

Embracing the Grind!

Friday morning we gathered for a chalk talk session, before getting on the bus for D.C.. Or so we thought. The chalk talk, went well, but our bus was late, then later, and then we learned there had been a communication failure, and the bus would not be arriving until 5:45PM! In fact, the bus arrived after 6PM, adding to the aggravation. So, instead of arriving late in the afternoon, with enough time to go see the Monuments, we reached our hotel at about 11:30PM!

Finally on the road! On The George Washington Bridge, this qualifies as “light traffic”.

While I would give our hotel, a below average grade, overall, the breakfast was definitely above average. Despite the late arrival and long day on Friday, the team seemed in good spirits as we got back on the bus and headed to Horace Fleming III Field at Jackson Reed High School, where the game would be played, since UDC’s field is being re-done.

The game itself, was never much of a contest. Despite deliberately working the ball around on offense, the Lions scored early and often. With more than ten minutes remaining in the second quarter, Molloy led 10-0, putting the game into “running time”. The Firebirds competed hard throughout, but were simply overmatched, falling by a final score of 19-2. Twelve different players scored for the Lions and 13 of our goals were assisted. It was great to get everyone into the game and to see them perform well.

A Team Effort (better than another photo of the scoreboard?)

Before we got back on the bus for the long trip back to Long Island, I was able to spend a few minutes catching up with our old neighbor and still close friend, Clint Morano, who made it to the game! It was a great to see him, and I really appreciate him making the effort to get there.

I didn’t forget the photo, this time! Thanks for making the trip, Clint! Photo Courtesy of Nicole Schaumloffel.

A little side note about the pre-game National Anthem. I get goosebumps every time the “Star Spangled Banner” is played, prior to a game. My favorite renditions, were at the Mercyhurst Home Games, when Diana’s teammate, Judy Rescott would sing it Live! Last week, I saw/heard a stirring electric guitar rendition from this year’s Army, Navy Men’s game. And then there is of course, Whitney Houston’s now classic rendition, which is what was played before our game against UDC. (this did not make up for the lack of an American Flag, which I felt was a bit disgraceful)

Here is the link to the guitar rendition.

We have our final two regular season games this week. We host Saint Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday and Caldwell on Saturday, which is Senior Day! We are looking to finish strong and ride that Mojo into the Playoffs!

GO LIONS!
